2. Shetland Sheepdogs, Ponies & Sheep Tour
Highlights:
Native Animals Up Close, Breeder Visit, Castle, Scenic Drives, Café Stop
Overview
Drive west through the Shetland mainland passing the verdant valleys of Tingwall and Weisdale enroute to the sheltered bay of Tresta to visit the home of a Shetland Sheepdog, Pony & Sheep breeder and learn everything about our native breeds. Stop off at three of our most iconic viewpoints along the way. Enjoy a coffee break at local establishment.
Our tour takes us on scenic drive of central and west Shetland, where you will have ample opportunities to take photographs before we arrive at the main event. We begin by heading out of Lerwick’s south road, looking out for our first Shetland ponies enroute to the viewpoint overlooking Scalloway on the west side of the mainland. Here we can look over our ancient capital, where history meets modern life, with Scalloway Castle built in 1599 commanding the view over the modern, working Blacksness pier. From here we drive through the Tingwall valley passing the site of the Law Ting Holm, the site of our Viking parliament. Continuing our journey west we drive through the villages of Whiteness and Weisdale, stopping at a hilltop viewpoint in each place.
Just over the hill from Weisdale we arrive at Tresta to the home of mother and daughter Marion and Amanda who breed Shetland Sheepdogs, Ponies and Sheep. Usually there will be a Shetland Pony foal (born in May) and of course the wonderful dogs. Knitting enthusiasts will enjoy seeing the variety of naturally occurring Shetland wool on the native breed ewes and handle a selection of fleeces. Our knowledgeable hosts will share information and be there to answer any questions you have. After a relaxed visit with plenty of time to enjoy the company of the different animals, we head back to town via a local café in either Weisdale or Scalloway for a refreshment stop before your guide drops you back to town.
